rebecca roth
First up, we would like to give Rebecca Roth a very big thank you for her role in launching the market alongside Holly and Shannon in April 2009. Bec worked extremely hard to help build our beautiful market into what it is today, and we are ever so grateful for your dedication and the many many (many!) hours you put in. Stepping down in 2010 to open her lovely new shop and allow for more precious family time, we wish her our very best for the future.
We love how Rebecca Roth’s resin jewellery comes in a stunning and vibrant rainbow of colours. From the softest matt blacks, creams and taupes, to punches of lemon, pink, turquoise and red. Each piece is meticulously handmade by Bec in her Hobart studio, the necklaces are even finished with sterling silver clasps crafted from Tasmania’s finest silversmiths. Her contemporary range includes a beautiful collection of necklaces, bangles, rings and earrings, cufflinks & homewares….like a lolly shop for adults really!
When and why did your business begin?
My business started in late 2005. I was a stay-at-home new mum. I was mostly housebound with a newborn and a 15 month old toddler. I began making beaded jewellery pieces for myself, friends and family members whilst my children slept. It was ‘my time’. What began as ‘my time’ playing with a few beads has now grown into a business selling online, at local and interstate markets, wholesaling to galleries and retail outlets across Australia and New Zealand. I began experimenting with the resin process soon after in 2006 and it is today my main material that I work with.
What are your creations inspired by?
Every piece is inspired by something different, many of my pieces have been born by walking along Tasmania’s coastlines finding pebbles that I collect, hold, think about and by the time I have returned home they have their course/design/processes to run. I am inspired by colour. It often stops me dead in my tracks. I love the fact that so many spectrums of one colour tint can form many different coloured and unique pieces. The possibilities are endless.
What’s your favourite thing about what you do?
My studio time. I love to work in quiet. I have time and my imagination runs wild in there. It’s where I do all my thinking. No time anywhere else. My phone stays out. I come up with many new plans/designs/to do lists whilst I have time to play. My making and designing part of my business feeds my creative side, whilst the administration and marketing provides me with endless challenges. Also, I enjoy the time and process that a piece takes form my original sketch to the final product that then is displayed and ready for purchase. I love everything about my design and making processes. I sometimes struggle with not having enough time to do this as much as I would like.
Favourite colours/materials to work with?
All colours, but my favourite is red. I think my main material might be resin, today anyway. Stay tuned.
What can customers coming to the market expect to see at your stall?
Unique Handmade Tasmanian Resin jewellery pieces – rings, necklaces, cufflinks, bangles, earrings and more!
Favourite piece you make?
My favourite piece that I make would have to be my oldest design of necklaces – 10 beads necklace. There have been many born in my studio. They also continue to be a best seller.
